Happy Birthday, Caterpillar!

October 8, 2009
Apple Glen Elementary
All students met together during their activity classes by grade level. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar together. Students would read "but he was still hungry" as a group.
After reading the book and discussing how caterpillar had been teaching kids to count, to remember the days of the week, and to learn about the life phases of a butterfly, we participated in a birthday party for caterpillar. We had party games like Pin the Tail on the Monkey, Bulls-Eye, Tin Can Alley, Bow and Apple, Face Painting, and Bobbing Apples. For refreshments, students ate apple slices and gummy "caterpillars". A great time was had by all who participated. We had moms, dads, teachers, students, and other volunteers in the school, who made this a great birthday celebration for us all.

Trace Eric Carle's life

October 7, 2009
Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Our school is in the Stuttgart, Germany area. We are a DoDDS American military school.
Eric was born in the states, and came to this area as a child and was educated here. Have children at all ages see what they can find out about the author; Have them in different ways express what they found out. Write a book, story or short paragraph, draw pictures, make a time line to mention a few.
Have an all school celebration on October 8th to remember this anniversary. At our school the local USO is providing a copy of the book to every single child.
Do class "read to self" activities, or have guest readers. Invite the community and local newspaper to attend.

26th Annual Leap Sandcastle Contest

October 3, 2009
Ocean Beach, San Francisco, CA
Leap…imagination in learning was established in response to severe budget cuts in Arts programs in California schools. These cuts began in 1978 and continue to effect arts education in our schools today. Leap serves over 6,500 youth (primarily elementary school age) in over 25 schools in the Bay Area (San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda and Marin counties). Leap provides educational programs focused on the arts of story telling, music, dance, theatre, creative writing, visual arts and an architecture program focused on our built environment.
The Leap Sandcastle Contest happens annually and is a fundraiser supported by architects, engineers, and contractors. This year's theme, Children's Classic Books has inspired our team (Team Caterpillar - Centric Construction, Johanna Street, Architect, Kim Sykes, Architect and Jefferson Elementary School) to build a giant caterpillar sandsculpture surrounded by fruits and cakes for the contest. The beach is open to the public for viewing the contest creations. Congratulations on 40 years of the Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Waco Cultural Arts Fest

September 19, 2009
Indian Spring Park, Waco
Waco Cultural Arts Fest is a 501( c )3 organization and annually presents a FREE two day arts festival for Waco and Central Texas in the fall. This year the festival will be September 19-20 at Indian Spring Park, in downtown Waco.
Because of a special collaboration with are early childhood development groups we are expanding our arts activities for our youngest guests. As part of our 'Arts for All" program one of our activities will celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
We plan to give away approximately 2000 Very Hungry Caterpillar story books and create our own Very Hungry Caterpillar. A giant caterpillar sculpture made by the Art Department at McLennan Comunity College. However, our caterpillar will need a new "coat". We will be asking the children to add scraps of paper and splodges of paint to make his new "coat'. Eventually we hope to take our Very Hungary Caterpillar around to early childhood groups so that the caterpillar can be apart of a Very Hungry for Reading program.
Wiggle, Waggle, Snuggle (Movement & Literacy)
Language naturally flows from the experience of music and movement. The three go hand in hand in the developing child who is stockpiling vocabulary at an enormous speed in the first three years of life. Children who are ready to, who are exposed to a variety of literacy opportunities and who are encouraged to “act out” the stories they hear receive invaluable benefits that will build on language skills both spoken and written. Puppets, costumes, and other props enhance the theme of the books and stories that children love to read.
Activities: 1) Each child will receive a VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR book and there will be storytelling
2) Costumes and dramatic play props for movement and acting
3) Soft spaces for reading
Caterpillar Walk (Decision Making and Construction)
Our caterpillar needs a new coat, lots of “Stuff” to choose from to create a colorful new coat for our large caterpillar sculpture.

We're celebrating with a birthday party for The Very Hungry Caterpillar! We'll start our program by singing Happy Birthday to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then after viewing the short video on this site, the preschool children will make their own collage caterpillars using tissue paper and cocoon/butterflies using paper plates. Each child will have a different color butterfly name tag that will correspond to the colors of the animals in Brown Bear, Brown Bear and they will get to hold up the animal stick puppet that matches the color of their name tag while we act out the story. For an activity break we'll get some exercise seeing if we can do all the actions in From Head to Toe. We'll finish with refreshments - green-frosted cupcakes that make the segments in the caterpillar's body and a red paper plate will be his head - and juice. Color enlargements of the food from the book will surround him. Each child will go home with a Very Hungry Caterpillar tattoo which came in the packet from Penguin.

This was a school wide project to promote reading and writing in the classroom. When this was finished our art teacher used Mr. Carle's painting technique in lessons.

Just Like Eric Carle Book Publishing

March 20, 2009
Twenty-seven 4th graders studied how Eric Carle writes and does his art. They divided into 6 publishing companies. Each company wrote an original story and used tissue collage and pastels for the art. On March 20th we shared and gave our books to each of our 6 first grade classrooms. Book topics ranged from football to The Happy Dragon to skateboarding to an ABC book. The kids were surprised at how much work the books were. They had a hard time giving them away. The first graders were impressed and asked good questions. All the classes watched the Picture Writer video. We have photos of the creative process, the final product, and sharing celebrations.

¡Feliz Cumpleaños! Happy Birthday, Very Hungry Caterpillar!

March 13, 2009
I teach a Bilingual Kindergarten's classroom (English _Spanish). Four months ago, we read your famous story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and we loved. No matter how many times we read it, my students always enjoyed! For that reason, I chose Mr. Eric Carle and his books like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to develop a week of lessons for an author study. So, when I visited your site I thought it would be a great idea to join to the 40th Anniversary Celebration. My kindergarten students and I are making drawings about the Hungry Caterpillar and we are going to hang them in our Wall Border, that is in the hall next to our classroom with a big poster, which has Mr. Carle’s picture drawing a “Hungry Caterpillar”. We will send you pictures of our classroom event!

Animals We Know in Collage Art Form

March 13, 2009
Ashley Elementary School Annex
My second graders have read stories and analyzed illustrations of Eric Carle's books. They read about different animals and wrote and published (typed) reports about what they learned about the animals. Students applied tempera paint to paper, leaving brush strokes, overlaying color, etc. in the style of Eric Carle's book illustrations. They then used the collections of paintings to cut and assemble illustrations for their animal report using a collage technique as influenced by the illustrations of Eric Carle's books. We displayed our animal reports with illustrations in the hallway ourside our classroom. We invited our students' families to come visit March 13 and view our work. The display is still available for visitors to see.

Collages in the Style of Carle

March 1, 2009
Hermosa Vista, Falcon Hill, and Holmes Elementary Schools
In celebration of Arizona State Youth Art Month, my sixth grade students at 3 elementary schools used a process similar to Eric Carle's illustration creations and made torn paper collages from construction paper they painted themselves. Five of those students are now being exhibited at the Phoenix Art Museum's Wolfswinkel Education Center as part of an student exhibit put on by Arizona's Art Education Association.
What I love about such a project being presented to sixth graders is that they are so familiar with a story such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, that it still evokes the imagination and inspires students not only in art, but about the natural world around them. Its about the stages of growing up, and they are on the cusp of that as they ready to enter junior high school; A timeless classic by a beloved author.

Japanese Preschool Mother's performance!

February 18, 2009
Tokyo, Japan
Every year, the children and the parents put together a performance at the preschool. It is quite elaborate by American standards!
This year, the Japanese parents will sing the Japanese song called "Aomushi wa onaka ga suite" (Hungry Caterpillar) and then the few foreign parents have created their own "comical" version of the story. It is about a FOREIGN caterpillar who eats through many Japanese foods. We will be trying to teach the children some English words for these foods.
Should be interesting...! I am off to practice it right now!
